University of Iowa Discovery Days

What is Discover Your University?

Discover Your University helps Iowa faculty and staff discover great things happening around campus.

The program offers sponsored visits to various campus sites during normal working hours, providing opportunities to learn about innovative programs like our water treatment facility or power plant.

Discover Your University lets individuals and teams experience the breadth of incredible work going on at the university and discover something new, surprising, or inspiring.

The program launched in fall 2022. This year, the water treatment facility operated by ENGIE will be featured during the October 18 event. Sign up for a tour here.

All Faculty and Staff Welcome

Discover Your University is open to all Iowa faculty and staff. Faculty and staff—individually or as teams—can take part in up to two events (on the same day or on different days) each year.

Iowa’s Educational Opportunities policy encourages participation in educational and developmental programs like Discover Your University. In addition, the Volunteer Time Release policy supports activities that enhance community engagement.

RAGBRAI Bike ENGIE Riders

UIEC Team Members Participate in Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI)

RAGBRAI, Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is more than just a bike ride; it is an epic eight-day rolling festival of bicycles, music, food, camaraderie, and community. It is the oldest, largest, and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world. Typically, 40,000-60,000 cyclists ride each day, traveling from around the world to participate. RAGBRAI marked its 50th anniversary in July 2023.

Twenty-five ENGIE Iowa employees and family members rode on the final day of RAGBRAI, dipping their front tire into the Mississippi River in celebration of finishing the ride.

ENGIE-Iowa folks wore customized ENGIE cycling jerseys and had a great time as they cycled from Coralville, IA to Davenport, IA on July 29th.

Mark Maxwell, an ENGIE Environmental Engineer, and Roger Mullinnix, a Sr. Plant Technician, reported that they met another ENGIE employee who works in Washington State that had traveled in for the ride.  She recognized them by their branded jerseys.  It really is a small world!

ENGIE also sponsored one of the campgrounds used by riders; after a 60 mile an hour thunderstorm disrupted the encampment, ENGIE provided portable spotlights to assist campers in restoring their shelters.

Ribbon Cutting

Chiller Plant Renovation Ribbon Cutting Celebration – October 13th

Join the University of Iowa and energy partner ENGIE for the celebration of a major infrastructure upgrade to the university’s chilled water plant and distribution system. This system supplies all the buildings on campus with 42,000 tons of chilled water for space and process cooling purposes.

The newly upgraded and highly resilient system includes the replacement of three chillers with a single high capacity 5,000-ton chiller. Upgrades to the piping infrastructure will also help with responding to changes in demand for chilled water. This project is one of many infrastructure upgrades being completed with the University of Iowa Energy Collaborative to improve efficiency and reliability.

Light refreshments will be served. RSVP using the link below.
